Sigurd Risting (1870-Oct 14, 1935) was born in Sunnfjord in Norway. He was studying at Nordfjords amtskole and Sogndals Folkehøgskule and examined at Stord lærarskule 1889. He was the second teacher 1893 and principal 1896 at Skiringssals ungdomsskule.[1]
Later Sigurd Risting started the interest of whaling and was writing the history of and statistics about modern whaling. 1922 he was writing the first Norwegian history about whaling; "Av Hvalfangstens Historie" (the History of Whaling) - Publikation Nr 2 Fra kommandør Chr. Christensens Hvalfangstmuseum i Sandefjord, collecting 20 years of experiences and statistics of whaling. Since 1903 he had compiled annual reviews, and in June 1913 he joined the staff of the newally started periodical "Norsk Hvalfangst-Tidende" (the Norwegian Whaling Gazette) for which he later (1922–1935) became the editor.[2] In 1930 Risting was creating the International Whaling Statistics and in the first numbers of the periodical he was collecting from the whole world whaling statistics the way back to 1868.[3]
From 1918 and to the end of his life Sigurd Risting became secretary of Norsk Hvalfangerforening (the Whaling Association of Norway).
Risting Glacier in South Georgia has got its name from Sigurd Risting.
